"Diane. 3:27 am. I'm in Audrey's room in the bookhouse."
[Cooper's voice is hushed.]
"Audrey is sleeping -- presumably peacefully. There are no signs that she left the room -- or even her bed. Harry and Hawk were at the bookhouse the entire time I was gone, and one of them was in the room with Audrey without fail. There are also no signs that she walked anywhere -- her feet likely would have shown signs of it."
[A deep breath.]
"I left the Great Northern after visiting Milliways to regain a sense of calm. The night could have easily ended with myself, Harry, and Audrey dead. Benjamin Horne -- after I dealt with him I returned to my room and entered Milliways, and spoke with various people.
"Including Audrey.
"She disappeared under my hands, Diane. And she said -- she said the man who let her in was the man who killed Laura."
[Noises: a soft moan; a click as though Cooper has set down the tape recorder; his voice, intentionally soft and soothing.
This goes on for several moments.
Then, quieter, and yet more easily audible, as though he's speaking directly into the recorder once more.]
"Diane. The Lord of Nightmares appeared when I asked Lord Morpheus who killed Laura Palmer. The last thing Audrey said before she disappeared was that the man who let her into Milliways was the one who killed Laura.
"I should talk to Moiraine. But I spent enough time in Milliways tonight -- time doesn't pass, but it feels as though it does, and Harry and Hawk have been here too long for me to look for her again tonight. And I've kept him out this long. Finding her again -- in Milliways -- that shouldn't be a problem."
"I am personally responsible for what has happened to Audrey. What I saw earlier tonight...
"That -- that is the stuff of nightmares."
[A soft sigh.]
"Waking dreams. Visions.
"Dawn is only a few hours off, Diane. I could wish that it were closer."
Click.
